The number 4 appears in the beginning of Hip-Hop culture as well as with some of the most of Hip-Hop’s successful producers and pioneers. There are 4 pillars of the Hip-Hop culture: “MCing, DJing, B-Boying/B-Girling and Graffiti”.

The first Hip-Hop single to achieve Gold status was “Rapper’s Delight” which went as high as #4 on the United States R&B chart and #36 on the US pop chart. The number 36 is “4×9=36”.

Two of Hip-Hop’s  recognized founders, Afrika Bambaataa and Kool DJ Herc were born in the 4th month of the year, which is April:

  • Afrika Bambaataa born on April 4, 1960.

It is interesting to note that Jay Z and Beyonce were married on April 4, 2008. The day of April 4th is of important significance in the history of Hip-Hop and America. As mentioned before Afrika Bambaattaa was born on April 4th, 1960 and April 4th 1968 is when Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. Bambaataa was born 8 years before King’s tragic death. “8” is “4+4=8”.  Jay-Z’s marriage to Beyonce took place 40 years after King’s assassination.

DJ Kool Herc was born 13 years before King’s assassination, “13” equals “1+3=4”.

Summary

The title of this article “Numerology & Hip-Hop: “4” Builders” is about the hidden dimensions to Hip-Hop’s history. When we look at the foundations of Hip-Hop, we find the number 4. The qualities that have been ascribed to the number “4” deal with “foundation” and “organization”. Thus to see the “4” with pioneers, head of labels and record producers it is somewhat “cosmic”:

  • The two of the founders of Hip-Hop are born in the 4th month of the year, which is April.
  • There are 4 original pillars of Hip-Hop:”MCing, DJing, B-Boying/B-Girling and Graffiti”.
  • Some the biggest names in Hip-Hop have the “4” energy in one aspect or another this is seen with  Afrika Bambaataa,  Kool DJ Herc, Russell Simmons, P.Diddy, Jay-Z and Timbaland.
  • The first Hip-Hop song to achieve Gold status(500,000 units sold) peaked at #4 on the USA R&B chart and peaked at #36 on the USA pop chart.  36 is 4X9=36.

The other “builders” briefly looked at could be considered an addition to the base or foundation of the number 4. Those whose birthdates equal 5, could be considered “4+1=5”, those whose birthdates give us 6, should be viewed as “4+2=6” and so on. In other words, everyone who came after the foundation that was laid added to the “4”.

The qualities and traits of each number are not to be expected to be found in each person. This also includes the negative aspect of each number. There are other influences to what makes a person who they are but the reader is free to connect the dots.

A separate article will be written on Afrika Bambaataa.
